As millions of Brits book their next holiday this January, new research has revealed that airport drop-off zones now carry fines of up to £100, meaning a short delay unloading bags or a missed payment could lead to a penalty landing on your doormat weeks later.

thimbl have analysed the drop-off rules, overstay charges and penalty notices at major UK airports, and found that drivers can face fines ranging from £50 to £100, even when they exceed the time limit by only a few minutes.

January is one of the busiest months of the year for holiday bookings, with families locking in Easter, summer, and winter-sun trips, and while travellers are used to comparing flight prices and hotel deals, experts warn that many holidaymakers are budgeting for flights and hotels without realising how costly a simple drop-off mistake can be.

UK airports ranked by highest drop-off fines

Rank Airport Drop-off fine
1 Gatwick Airport £100 parking charge notice (reduced to around £60 if paid early)
2 Bristol Airport £100 parking charge notice
3 Newcastle Airport £100 parking charge notice
4 Leeds Bradford Airport £80–£100 parking charge notice
5 Stansted Airport £60–£100 parking charge notice
6 London City Airport £80–£100 parking charge notice expected
7 Heathrow Airport £80 parking charge notice (£40 if paid within 14 days)
8 Southampton Airport £50–£80 parking charge notice
9 Edinburgh Airport £70 for 24 hours, then £40 per day
10 Manchester Airport £25 for 30 minutes in the drop-off zone

At many airports, charges apply from the moment a vehicle enters the drop-off zone, with strict time limits and automated enforcement. Some airports charge £1 per minute for overstaying, while others issue a fixed penalty regardless of how long the driver remains.

  • East Midlands Airport, which charges £1 for every minute over the limit
  • Glasgow Airport, which charges £1 per minute, rising to £50 after 30 minutes
  • Aberdeen Airport, where overstaying costs £1 per minute, or £50 for 30 minutes

According to Joe Lytwyn, personal finance expert at thimbl, the system leaves drivers with little room for error.

"Drop-off zones now operate more like penalty zones," Joe said. "If traffic is slow, bags take longer than expected, or you miss the payment window, the fine can be ten times higher than the original charge."

The research also found that free or lower-cost drop-off options do exist at several airports, but are poorly signposted and often overlooked.

Examples include:

  • Belfast City Airport, which offers free drop-off in the long-stay car park
  • Birmingham Airport, the only major UK airport still offering free terminal drop-off for up to 10 minutes
  • Several airports where passengers can be dropped off free of charge in long-stay car parks, with a short shuttle bus or walk to the terminal

Joe says these options can save families significant money.

"Using a long-stay car park and a shuttle bus is not always as convenient, but it can save a potential £50 to £100 instantly," he said. "The key is knowing about it before you travel."

Travellers booking holidays in January are particularly likely to be caught out because drop-off rules are rarely checked in advance.

"People plan flights, hotels and luggage, but almost nobody plans the drop-off," Joe said. "By the time you realise there’s a strict time limit or payment rule, you’re already there."

"Spending five minutes before you travel checking drop-off rules, payment systems and free alternatives can be the difference between a free goodbye and a £100 fine."
