Data: Average Debt by Postcode Area
Britain’s debt map is changing, with some parts of the country seeing sharp rises in average unsecured borrowing over the past year.
New analysis of anonymised thimbl customer data reveals how average outstanding unsecured debt has changed across postcode areas between September 2025 and July 2026.
While some areas have seen average balances climb, others have recorded a fall, creating a striking picture of how levels of unsecured borrowing vary across the UK.
So, where has unsecured debt risen the most — and which parts of the UK have seen average balances fall?
Here’s what the data shows.

The analysis covers customers with outstanding unsecured debt recorded on their credit file, with only postcode areas meeting the required sample size included in the results.
The figures represent two separate snapshots of thimbl customers rather than tracking the same people over time. They therefore show how average debt levels among customers in each area changed between the two periods, rather than how individual customers' debts changed.
