Experts have issued a warning that ignoring damage to fencing over winter could lead to costly repairs and disputes with neighbours.

Failing to inspect fences after storms, strong winds, and wet weather is one of the most common garden mistakes households make at this time of year, and one that can quickly become expensive if left unresolved.

Even minor damage, such as loose panels or leaning posts, can worsen over time and lead to full fence replacement if not fixed early.

Typical costs for fence repairs range from £80 for a small repair to the hundreds for larger fixes, depending on the extent of the damage and the size of the boundary. In more serious cases, where fences collapse or cause damage to neighbouring property, costs can be significantly higher.

Property professionals say boundary issues are among the most common causes of neighbour disputes in the UK, often triggered by poorly maintained fences or unclear responsibility for repairs.

Joe Lytwyn, consumer finance expert at thimbl.com, says many homeowners underestimate how quickly small fence problems can escalate.

“Winter weather can weaken fences without people noticing, especially after heavy rain or strong winds,” Joe says. “A loose panel or damaged post might seem minor, but if you ignore it, the problem could get worse and lead to a much bigger repair bill later.”

Experts say spring is the most important time to check garden boundaries, as hidden winter damage often becomes visible once gardens begin to dry out and people start spending more time outdoors.

Joe says taking action early can significantly reduce repair costs. “Fixing a small problem now is usually far cheaper than replacing an entire fence later,” he says. “A quick inspection at the start of spring can help you spot issues early and avoid unexpected expenses.”

He recommends homeowners carry out a simple five-minute check before beginning any garden work.

Key things to look for include:

Loose or leaning fence panels Cracked or rotting posts Gaps between panels Signs of movement after storms Damage at ground level

Joe also warns that failing to maintain fences can sometimes create liability issues if damage affects neighbouring property. ‘If your fence collapses and damages a neighbour’s garden or belongings, you could be responsible for the repair costs,’ he says. ‘That’s why routine checks are so important and could help prevent problems before they become expensive.’
