Shoppers are being cautioned to think twice before snapping up personalised Christmas gifts this year, as, unbeknownst to many, customised items are not eligible for a refund.

Many buyers assume they can simply send something back if it’s the wrong size or colour, but consumer experts say one small tweak, such as engraving a name or adding a photo, instantly wipes out your return rights.

That means some of the UK’s most popular festive presents could turn into costly, non-refundable regrets.

The hidden rule catching shoppers out

Under UK consumer law, personalised or made-to-order items aren’t covered by standard change-of-mind return rights. Retailers can offer goodwill returns, but they don’t have to - and many don’t.

So, while you could send back a standard product within the retailer’s return period, the moment you click ‘add engraving’ or ‘custom design’, your protection vanishes.

Joe Lytwyn, a personal finance expert at thimbl.com, says: “Personalised gifts are thoughtful, but if something isn’t quite right, they can turn into one of the biggest return traps of the season. Many gift-givers don’t realise that once an item has been customised, your legal right to a refund disappears unless the item is faulty. A spelling mistake or wrong size could leave you stuck with a present that nobody wants.”

Joe also warns of the dangers of buying personalised items online: “Many online sellers operating on platforms such as TikTok know that once something has been personalised, they don’t have to accept a return – and some use this to their advantage. Shoppers often only realise that the quality of the item is compromised after it has arrived. To avoid this situation, always preview the design properly, double-check spelling, and avoid any seller that doesn’t publish a clear returns policy.”

The top Christmas gifts you can’t send back

These are the items most likely to leave shoppers out of pocket this Christmas:

  • Personalised gifts
From chopping boards and cushions to prints and ornaments, anything with initials, names, dates, or messages added is yours, even if you change your mind.

  • Engraved jewellery
Necklaces, bracelets, and rings with names or messages are hugely popular at Christmas, but they’re also a refund minefield. Once engraved, you can’t return it because the jeweller can’t resell it.

  • Custom mugs and books
Personalised storybooks for kids, slogan mugs with someone’s name, and photo-printed accessories all fall outside standard return rights. One typo or wrong photo, and you’re stuck.

  • Photo calendars
A festive favourite, but completely non-returnable. As soon as you upload pictures, it becomes a bespoke item.

  • Bespoke home décor
Think custom neon lights, made-to-measure wall prints, personalised signs, monogrammed cushions, and tailored art; these items do not come with the luxury of a “changed my mind” safety net.

Things to be aware of before you personalise a gift

Retailers often advertise generous return policies, leading people to assume everything can be sent back, but buried in the small print is often that all-important caveat: ‘Excludes personalised or made-to-order items.’

As the big day creeps closer, Christmas shopping can become a frenzied task, and the act of purchasing personalised items online – especially when scrolling through social media on a whim – can be a real trap when it comes to refund rights.

Joe suggests the following pointers for shoppers:

  • Double-check spellings before ordering anything customised.
  • Only opt for personalisation if you’re sure the recipient will love it.
  • Check the retailer’s policy - some offer voluntary returns, while others don’t.
  • If an item arrives faulty or damaged, you may be covered by Section 75 protection if you paid with a credit card.

Joe adds, “Christmas is expensive enough without accidental no-refund purchases. Being selective about what you personalise and checking items thoroughly before you place an order can make a real difference to your budget.”
