Are you thinking about hiring a car?
Did you know that you’ll need a credit card to rent a car with many companies? This is usually to secure a deposit against damage to the vehicle or to cover the cost of the rental (other payment methods may be available).
In our guide, thimbl explores hiring a car both in the UK and abroad.
Do you need a credit card to rent a car in the UK?
You may need a credit card to rent a car in the UK, although this will depend on the company you choose. Some car hire companies may consider other payment methods.
Can you rent a car with a debit card?
Some companies accept debit card payments, while others will ask you to use a credit card instead.
If you’re unsure which payment and deposit methods are accepted, it’s a good idea to check the car hire company’s website or contact them directly.
Do you need a credit card to rent a car abroad?
You could be asked to provide a credit card when renting a car abroad, but again, this will vary depending on the company you use. You should also be aware that when hiring a car abroad, you’ll need comprehensive insurance cover and possibly an International Driving Permit (IDP), depending on your destination.

Before you hire a car…
There are several things you should consider before you hire a car.
- Do your research. Look into different companies and compare prices to ensure that you get the best deal. Sites such as KAYAK and Skyscanner can compare car hire costs in a range of locations both in the UK and overseas.
- Check the car hire company’s terms and conditions so you know which documents you’ll need to provide; for example, you may need to show your passport.
- Whether using a credit or debit card, you’ll need to make sure that the card is registered in the main driver’s name.
- Ensure you have enough money to cover the cost of the car hire. If using a credit card, it’s vital to make sure that you do not go over your credit limit – that’s the amount of money you’ve been approved to borrow on your credit card.
Car hire: how does it work?
The process of renting a car will vary between companies, but typically, you could expect the journey to look a little like this:
- Browse the company website or visit a centre in person to choose your vehicle.
- It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the company's terms and conditions, including the documents you’ll need and the payment options available.
- If applying online, you will need to select a pick-up time and location. You’ll meet with a company representative who’ll need to see your driving licence and any other documents. If you’ve hired the car in person, your documents will be checked before you’re able to take the car.
- The next step will be to sign the rental agreement. At this stage, you’ll pay the car rental deposit and fee.
- If the vehicle is returned in the same condition it was hired in, your deposit will be refunded.

You will always be made aware of any credit limit changes to any credit cards you have beforehand, and you do not have to accept a credit limit increase if you don't feel it's right for you.
What happens if I fail to make my repayments?
Missed payments will be reported to the credit bureaus, and your account will appear as in arrears. You will be charged a late fee, which is usually around £12. Your credit rating is also likely to decline as a result.
